This game is inspired by Stranger Things. Fans will enjoy the little references, but you don’t need to know the show the game is perfect for anyone who likes mysteries, paranormal stories, or fantasy worlds. Best played on Halloween but it also works anytime you want a cool brain challenge.
The Story
You and your friends have to solve the secret of strange mushroom experiments. Find the network of puffball mushroom’s agents, create a weakness serum, and turn dangerous spores into rainbow dust. It’s a bit like Escaperoom — right at home.
Place
You can play anywhere — at home, in a café, country house, or hotel. Just print the materials (color or black & white), cut out the pieces, put puzzles into envelopes, and place the game materials around the space.

We played this home mystery game about mushrooms with our teens yesterday — and it was a total hit! Even though I helped set it up, I didn’t read everything beforehand, so I joined in too — and honestly, it was really fun. The puzzles are clever and not too easy, which made it even more satisfying when we cracked them. At one point, I was still thinking through a clue while the teens had already solved it — turns out they’re sharper than I gave them credit for. We especially liked the QR code moments — such a cool way to keep things interactive. Highly recommend for families with teens. Smart, original, immersive — and a great way to connect without screens for a bit.

Just had to share while it’s all still fresh! Yesterday, my husband ran the Mushroom mystery game for me and our daughters — and we’re completely blown away! Usually I’m the one running these kinds of games, not playing — but this time I got to be a participant, and I loved every second of it. It was exciting, the storyline was fantastic, and the immersion — the voices, the characters — was just on another level. The hat puzzle — how long did it take you to cut all those pieces?? And the mushroom descriptions… as someone who teaches creative thinking for a living, I take my hat off to you. Or rather… my mushroom cap.
At the beginning of the mystery game, players receive a strange message: spores are about to be released, and they must put on protective suits. It’s the alarm system of the Mushroom Laboratory, where scientists once carried out dangerous experiments on rare fungi that could threaten humanity.
As the story unfolds, participants discover a letter from Professor Albert Shroomson — the head of the lab, who is away on a research trip and unable to stop the coming disaster. With the fungal agents spreading fast, players must act quickly and precisely to avoid catastrophe.
The only hope lies in using the laboratory’s secret weakness serum against the right mushroom. But which vial is the right one? And which fungus will it work against?
There’s a twist: the supreme and most dangerous mushroom puffball isn’t clever enough to understand idioms. So the professor has hidden his instructions and clues in them.
This printable adventure game is perfect for teens and adults alike. It builds teamwork and cooperation — essential skills in tricky situations. And many puzzles are designed to spark laughter. Step into a paranormal dimension and boost your logic and creativity!
For bilingual families: we’ve included a glossary of idiomatic expressions used in the game. Yes, teens may need a bit of help but that makes it a fun and educational experience too.
What you’ll need:
- Colour printer (or print shop)
- Paper for printing puzzles — 28 sheets
- Scissors
- Blu tack
- 7 envelopes (A6 size) + 1 envelope (A4 size)
- Pencil and eraser for solving tasks
- Phone or tablet for audio and video tasks
- Sweets (or other prizes)
- Aluminum foil (a whole roll or just a few sheets — optional, for making protective suits)
- Optional: rainbow smoke bombs for an epic finale. Light them at the end to celebrate the victory over Drizzlecap and his agents — and capture some amazing photos!
